Associate Professor |
My primary role as chairman of the department is to provide initial information to students interested in the various programs offered by the Department. I see this role as providing direct assistance to students in the areas of general information, application and registration procedures, and preliminary program design prior to their formal admission to the department and the assignment of a faculty advisor.
My teaching assignments include the two focused research courses, Rdg 598 Seminar in Reading Research and Rdg 698 Research Seminar, the culminating course in the sixth year program. Also, I teach the "Issues" course, Rdg 680 Trends and Issues in Reading and Language Arts, taken early in the 6th year program and a clinical practices course, Rdg 598, in the summer. In addition, I supervise the sixth year, six credit practicum, Rdg 696 Practicum for Reading and Language Arts Consultants. These courses operate within the confines of a personal belief system which recognizes advanced graduate students as self motivating, self directed, responsible, career focused learners. In order to facilitate this belief system, there must be the freedom and the responsibility to carry out course goals, objectives and projects in a manner which is unique to that individual student.
My research interests are in two areas: literacy assessment and college level reading programs. In 1985 I studied a variety of college level developmental reading programs in the Eastern United States. Over 25 sites were visited and evaluated. Basically, programs were one of two distinct types, either learning to read or reading to learn. Learning to read programs focused on developing specific skill areas of reading such as vocabulary, comprehension and rate with a secondary function in the study skills. Reading to learn focused on the study skills with reading skills receiving secondary attention. I have been awarded a sabbatical for the spring of 1998. This leave will be used to study the effect of a new procedure for administering informal reading inventories.
