Orchestrating
Literacy Instruction:

Use
Case-based Studies
Via
the Internet
Dr.
Catherine Kurkjian and Dr. Randy Rush are participating researchers in
a study entitled Case Technologies to Enhance Literacy Learning (CTELL)
in which they are investigating the ways in which multimedia anchored
case-based studies over the Internet are used to enhance preservice
teachers’ abilities and insights to orchestrate effective literacy
instruction. This research contributes to a larger five-year study
sponsored by the National Science Foundation (Grant No. 0089221)
entitled Case Technologies to Enhance Literacy Learning (CTELL) with
Principal Investigators, Charles Kinzer, Vanderbilt University, Linda
Labbo, University of Georgia, Donald J. Leu, University of
Connecticut, and William H. Teale, University of Illinois, Chicago. As
a contributing university researchers in the implementation of the
CTELL grant, the goal of this research is to document the use of
multimedia case studies in its integration into course content, its
implementation, and to assess student learning outcomes.
The
CTELL cases delivered over the Internet are examples of teacher best
practice based on 12 identified research base principles of literacy
instruction. They provide students with examples of real life contexts
and serve as a way to provide a shared experience in discussing real
life applications of research-based practices. Dr. Kurkjian began her
work on CTELL prior to the inclusion of other university research
partners and shared her the results of her emerging research as a
keynote speaker at the opening session at Vanderbilt University in
June 2002.
