REFLECTION OF CYBERLESSON

  1. Provide background information on the development of your cyberlesson. For what grade level and curriculum did you develop it ?

This cyberlesson was developed with my first grade students in mind.  I decided to create a cyberlesson for our first grade Science unit on Plants to add the aspect of technology in it.  My district just received a new science curriculum this year, which includes a variety of activities to teach about the lifecycle of a plant. This cyberlesson would touch upon many learning modalities that my students require.

  1. How did you implement your cyberlesson? (small group, whole group, posted on the Internet to be done at home? Individually, as a learning center etc.)

My students have a great passion for working on computers with their fifth grade buddies.  They have paired up in the past to read books online and to complete simpler literacy activities.  Therefore, I thought that developing this cyberlesson for my first graders to complete with their fifth grade buddies would be a great addition to our plant unit.

  1. How did your students respond to the project?

The students absolutely LOVED the project!  Our access to the library’s computers is limited, so its always a treat when they have some time on them.  It was an extra special treat for them to work with their fifth grade buddies! The students especially enjoyed the links that gave them access to additional interactive learning material about plants.

  1. Strengths?

One main strength for this project was the collaboration with their fifth grade buddies.  It allowed my lower-functioning students to participate with the help of their buddies.  Also, this project incorporated interactive and stimulating learning for my students which always grabs their attention and sustains it for the remainder of the project.

  1. Weaknesses?

The only weakness for this project is that it obviously requires access to computers.  Our computer access is limited to a minimum of one visit a week per class.

  1. In what ways do you think your cyberlesson supported student learning?

The cyberlesson allowed the students access to more information about plants through the activities in this lesson, including the Internet links.  Students were also exposed to an interactive learning project that captured their interest, allowing them to get the most learning possible through this project.

  1. How would you modify the way in which you implemented the project to make it more successful?

Overall the whole project was a success.  Students were able to successfully complete the project with the assistance of their fifth grade buddy.  Working with their buddies was a great help for the success of this project.  The only modification I would make for next time is to complete the project over a two or three day span of time.  The project took up a good part of our day!  Accommodations would have to be made in order to get access to the computers in the classroom over a two or three-day period.

  1. Recommendations?

      Two recommendations for this project:

1.       Make sure you have access to enough computers for your class and their buddies(if applicable).

2.     There is a lot to explore and learn through this project; therefore, I feel this project would be best completed over two or three day period, whichever works best for your class.
