Course
Description:
Study of a wide variety of children's literature.
Investigation of the appreciation for literature with children. Competency in
storytelling and writing or original stories and poems will also be developed.
Course Objectives:

1. Teach classic
and contemporary children's and young adult's literature, and easy reading
fiction and nonfiction at appropriate levels. (2.3)(4.2)
2. Use text and trade books to stimulate interest, promote reading growth,
foster appreciation for the written word, and increase the motivation of
learners to read widely and independently for information, pleasure and personal

3. Model and discuss reading and writing as valuable, lifelong activities.

4. Provide opportunities for learners to select from a variety of print and
nonprint materials, to read extended texts, and to read for many authentic

5. Provide opportunities for creative and personal responses to literature,
which may include storytelling and use of multiple sign systems.

6. Use instructional and information technologies to support literacy learning.(2.2)(4.2)
7. Select and evaluate various types of children's books applying criteria based
on literary and artistic guidelines, multicultural considerations and research

8. Develop a variety of methods in order to bring children and children's

9. Identify and reflect on issues and current topics relevant to the field of

Other Requirements: It is a university requirement that everyone obtain an ID Blue Chip card.
