LITERACY CENTER

Central Connecticut State University continues to combat illiteracy by offering help for children with reading disabilities. The problems of illiteracy begin with a frustrated child having difficulties in reading and giving up, believing he or she will never catch up with peers. The Department of Reading and Language Arts' Reading Clinic provides remedial services to students in grades two through eight as a free service to the communities surrounding CCSU.

The clinicians are advanced graduate students enrolled in RDG 596 Clinical Practices in Reading. Clinicians tutor the students on a one to one basis. Ordinarily, 24 students per semester, and 48 students in the Summer participate in the Reading Clinic. Clinics are offered at the reading center on the campus of CCSU and, when necessary, in local schools. Clinics have been held in New Britain, Plainville, Waterbury, Winsted and Hartford.

Clinicians test the students to identify their reading disability, then work with them to overcome it. A case report is submitted to the student's regular classroom teacher at the end of the term with a series of recommendations to foster the educational growth for that specific child. Also, parent conferences are held at the end of the clinic session.

Students attend the clinic twice a week during the spring and fall and four times a week during the summer. Children can be referred by their school, from clinicians who previously worked in the Reading Clinic, or from their parents. CCSU professors of reading and language arts, serve as the Clinical Supervisors.

In addition to providing services to children, the reading clinic serves as a repository for current materials related to remedial and corrective techniques in reading. The center, along with the department bookroom, maintains a variety of print and non-print remedial materials, including reading series, relevant software and other materials and equipment related to the wide range of abilities in reading.
