Thomas Newkirk has written many books including The Art of Slow Reading (2011), Holding Onto Good Ideas in a Time of Bad Ones (2009), Teaching the Neglected "R" (2007, coedited with Richard Kent), and Misreading Masculinity (2004).
A former teacher of at-risk high school students in Boston, and Professor Emeritus at the University of New Hampshire, he has studied literacy learning at a variety of educational levels—from preschool to college. In 2010 he was the recipient of the Gary Lindberg Award for his outstanding contributions as a faculty member of the University of New Hampshire.



Beth Olshansky, has written several pieces on the incorporation of art and literature into literacy instruction including a book titled The Power of Pictures (2008) and many articles such as: Teaching the ART of Writing (2013) and Picture This: A Multimodal Approach to the Common Core that Engages All Learners (2014).
The founder and director of the Center for the Advancement of Art-Based Literacy at the University of New Hampshire, Beth has spent over two decades developing models for literacy instruction that integrate arts in order to improve upon students' writing and reading skills as well as their visual literacy.
