Beyond Reading Response

John Corcoran’s Video Speech

Why did he struggle with reading?

What were the consequences of his not being able to read?

How did he overcome his reading struggles?

How did the ability to read and write give him a sense of personal power?

v      His family moved around a lot when he was young

v      Teachers placed him in the “dumb row” and yelled at him for not trying

v      Teachers just passed him on with D’s because they didn’t want him hanging around

v      John had to rely on his friends to give him the answers

v      He got in a lot of trouble because he thought that it’s better to cause trouble and get kicked out rather than be asked to read

v      He had to cheat a lot – in high school he called it “petty crimes” in college it became more serious crimes

v      John had to always lie and cheat and pretend he could read, even when he became a teacher

v      John finally hired a tutor, at the age of 48 something

v      The tutor found out that he couldn’t hear all the letter sounds and that’s why he had trouble learning to read

v      He had to swallow his pride and admit to everyone that he’d been tricking them his whole life

v      He was supported by his wife and friends

v      Once he read at a 6th grade level he felt as though he’d been given a gift

v      John wrote a book and gives speeches to tell other people about his struggle so it won’t happen again

v      He says he is now happier, does not live his life in fear of being found out, and pushes for this to happen to no other kids in the United States (he says illiteracy is child abuse)

v      He can read for himself and doesn’t have to rely on anyone else

v      He has more power in his own life

Why did he struggle with reading?

What were the consequences of his not being able to read?

How did he overcome his reading struggles?

How did the ability to read and write give him a sense of personal power?

v      Because he didn’t have the ability to read anything because his parents moved so much and no teacher really ever taught him how to read

v      He cheated and  got a in a lot of trouble and had to lie even at work

v      When people at work would give him something to read he always pretended that he would read it later and he’d then give it to his wife to read

v      He had his students read the textbook but mostly he taught class without any thing to read

v      He hired a tutor to help him read and write when he was in his 50’s

v      Because he can now read and feel good about himself and can probably drive better
